Before you start your search for an athletic scholarship I highly recommend that you read the information on this page. It is essential that you have a clear understanding of the benefits and limitations of an athletic scholarship, as well as knowing what role these scholarships play in the financial aid process.

What are athletic scholarships?

Athletic scholarships are monetary awards to help fund all or part of your university education. Scholarships can be anywhere in the region of $500 to $30,000. They are offered to individuals for contribution to a university's sports team. Scholarships are regularly referred to as financial aid, however that is not actually correct. Financial aid refers to things like loans for example, which the student has to pay back. An Athletic scholarship does NOT need to be paid back.

It is important that you know that athletic scholarships are offered on a one year basis (not necessarily for every year of your studies). However most are renewed at the end of the school year, but do depend on your academic and athletic performance as well as your overall behaviour and attitude.

Full scholarships cover everything from tuition, accommodation, school fees and books. Partial scholarships only cover a certain percent of your enrollment costs at the university.

All colleges and universities that host sports programs are members of one of three major athletic associations. The NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) or the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association). Please check 'University Divisions' to find out more about these associations.
